ABC Centreville’s Steve Whittington made further progress in getting his race head back on in the Maxxis 4 Road Race in Rainford on Merseyside on the 8th of April, which was won by elite rider Richard Haughton, Brother NRG Driverplan. Steve writes:
“I did the Maxxis 4 road race on the 8th April (E/1/2/3) It was 50 miles around Pimbo in glorious weather. Leading up to it, thought I could potentially do something in this race with it being pancake flat and fast leading to the ‘inevitable’ bunch sprint.
After getting there and getting ready I didn’t have time for a proper warm up as it takes me around 40 miles nowadays. I managed to squeeze a lap of the circuit in but figured as the race would most certainly stay together, I could just sit in the bunch for a while and get warmed up, then start getting ready for the last lap melee. Everything went well for about 5 minutes but then attacks started going. One of them had a good size group of riders, 8 I think, most of which were from the elite teams so before anyone knew it, the break had a two minute lead and the elite teams back in the bunch that were represented in the break were closing everything down. It was race over.
Having paid £25 to enter the race, I wasn’t too keen on rolling round in zone 1 looking at rear mechs so I decided on a new strategy, of attacking whenever I could. The reasons were twofold, firstly, to piss the riders off as much as possible that were controlling everything, and secondly, to gain some valuable threshold training!! With both objectives ticked, I eventually finished the race in the bunch.”
